  2. Victoria, 20 km/12 mi SW of Kampala, the
  3. capital; 1,136 m/3,728 ft above sea level;
  4. population (1983) 21,000. Founded 1893, it
  5. was the administrative centre of Uganda
  6. 1894-1962. In 1976, a French aircraft was
  7. hijacked by a Palestinian liberation group.
  8. It was flown to Entebbe airport, where the
  9. hostages on board were rescued six days later
  10. by Israeli troops.
